High-Performance Materials in Aerospace Manufacturing

Aerospace applications demand materials with high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent fatigue resistance, thermal stability, and corrosion resistance. These are collectively called high-performance materials, and they are critical for airframes, engines, landing gear, and structural components.

1. Titanium Alloys

Properties: Lightweight, high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, good heat tolerance

4. Stainless Steels

5. Composites (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers, CFRP)

Machining Notes: Requires specialized tools to avoid delamination and fiber pull-out; dust extraction is essential

6. Ceramics and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMC)

Properties: Very high-temperature resistance, lightweight, oxidation resistance

Examples: SiC, Al2O3, Si3N4-based composites
Machining Notes: Usually machined via grinding, EDM, or laser; brittle, so delicate handling is required

7. High-Strength Steels / Tool Steels

Properties: Exceptional toughness, wear resistance, fatigue strength
Applications: Landing gear, engine mounts, aerospace tooling

8. Magnesium Alloys

Properties: Extremely lightweight, moderate strength, machinable
Applications: Interior aircraft components, UAV structures
Machining Notes: Highly flammable chips; requires proper cooling and fire precautions

9. Advanced Polymers / PEEK, PEI

Properties: Lightweight, heat-resistant, corrosion-resistant
Applications: Insulators, interior panels, structural components
Machining Notes: Can be CNC-milled or drilled; low cutting forces needed
